Adult Echocardiography

An echocardiogram provides information about the size and shape of the heart as well as the function of the heart chambers and valves. The test can also identify areas of the heart muscle that are not contracting normally due to poor blood flow or injury from a previous heart attack. In addition, a type of echocardiography called Doppler ultrasound shows how well blood flows through the heart's chambers and valves. Echocardiography can detect possible blood clots in the heart, a buildup of fluid in the sac surrounding the heart (pericardium), and problems with the aorta (the main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart).
